Name:
Katherine Newman
Nicknames:
Kate, Katie, Kat, Mrs. Newman.
Code Name:
Siren
Age:
35
Gender:
Female
Powers/Special Abilities:
Powers
Katherine's has superhumanly powerful lungs, throat and vocal cords which can create a sonic scream used for various effects on listeners. Kate’s hearing also works differently, whilst being enhanced by normal and sonar means she is able to focus on, enhance, or totally block out any sound around her, and this shielded her from the deafening sound her screams, and made her an extremely acute eavesdropper when needed.
She is able to overwhelm listeners with deafening noise, stun them with highly focused and low frequency screams. This is effective on covered ears due to her screams being able to penetrate the skull. With different frequency and volume songs or screams, she is able to put listeners into a hypnotic like trance or lull them to sleep. Louder screams can disorient, nauseate, or simply render people unconscious. With almost peak level concentration and focus, she is able to also block out others from hearing sounds so that she can secretly deliver messages or protect her own side from hearing her screams.
Kate also has psionic powers which direct sonic waves created by her. By utilizing her screams and psionic powers, she is able to fly, or hover at the speed of sound, and carry one person whilst at it. Using sonic waves, she is able to rapidly vibrate herself or other things to her will. She is able to generate sonic blasts which struck with tremendous concussive force, she can shatter objects, liquefying or outright disintegrating targets at his highest levels of her power though this can damage her vocal cords and leave her speechless for a fortnight. By radiating sound waves outward and reading the feedback, she can locate unseen objects as if done by sonar. Again, with almost peak level concentration, she could instinctively analyze, replicate, and block sonic waves or vibrations from other sources. But, in the heat of battle Siren normally loses concentration and cannot perform the such.
Kate can create psionic field which protects her and her team from the harmful effects of the sonic vibrations she creates, though her sonic powers could still cause her pain when pushed beyond safe limits. Without using her psionic shield, she is fully vulnerable to the effect of psionic vibrations. Normally, Kate would rely mostly on her scream.
Whilst her abilities are powerful, if she is gagged, she is not able to use her vocal chords and cannot use her scream.
Appearance:
Siren
Personality:
Kate is a very pure but mentally woman. Her emotions are normally under wraps and she doesn’t often show them with fear of looking weak. She always has the best intentions for others, and has a great empathy towards them too. Kate can assess the mood of a person and know when to intervene if situations become heated. She often knows what it is to be in people’s situations, due to often feeling them herself. Kate can be relied on, and hardly would let anyone down, and if she did at the worst of times, she would go out of her way to work it out for them.
Normally, Kate can become very emotionally attached to people, and due to her very caring approach to them, she can become protective over them as well. If they become hurt, Kate would try to alleviate the suffering that happened to that person, or people.
On the other hand, Kate can become extremely stressed and lash out if too much pressure is put on her. And if so, she would often apologize and try to make it up to that person. Those who Katherine becomes attached to, she would protect with a great amount of devotion. If those she cares for become hurt, she can get angered quickly and lash out.
A born leader, Kate knows how to deal with situations, and is quick with decisions. She is able to cool down heated arguments, and knows the best path to take, even if it may seem the harder way. Although the leader figure, Kate is very open to other’s opinions and takes them on board with her own.
Hobbies:
Singing, instruments, piano, art, gardening, cooking, reading, running.
Weapons/Equipment/Skills
Siren has no such abilities in fighting skills, but makes sure she keeps her body fit and strong so she is able to fight with hands if she needs to. She is a skilled piano player and cook, but refuses to believe it.
History:
Katherine was born in the early 70’s to Benjamin and Alice Newman. Her family was well off, and supported a family of three boys and a girl easily. She was a very inquisitive young girl, and showed talent in a number of things she tried out, often competing with her brothers and coming out on tops, much to their frustration. Although clever, Kate was naive, and often asked questions which ended up in a variety of situations, and using her charm to get out of such situations.
Kate soon made friends at school, even at a young age and stuck with them through her young years. At elementary school, she made more, and soon found out which were using her, prematurely developing knowledge of peoples demeanours towards her. In the end, she stuck with them through elementary school to high school.
Half way through high school, her mother developed an illness which left her bedridden for a month. While that happened, her father worked more to support the family, and Katherine was the one who took care of her mother and did the housework and cooking, along with her brothers who she comically whipped into shape when they did not comply to her rules.
After a while, her mother was well again, and Kate continued learning in high school as usual. By then, a small group of students had developed various mutant powers, and after displaying them, were discharged from the school. At this time, Kate had mixed feelings toward mutants. While she found them frightening, those with offensive powers, she also took awe to them.
Nearing the end of her high school life, she developed severe headaches and migraines, often going home from school. Her parents took her to the family doctor, who couldn’t diagnose anything. She took a week off school, her headaches getting worse. She felt the need to scream and did, the force of her scream blew out her window and smashed her perfume bottles and various nail polish bottles too. Her headaches ceased and after her parents found out of her mutant ability, they asked her to keep her abilities secret until she left high school for a certain Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. Wanting to pursue this, she did her best to follow her parent’s wants.
After a number of close shaves, she managed to complete her high school life and left for the school, enrolling in it. In her life at the school, she developed her powers to the extent she had almost full control over them and developed them to high degrees. She left the school with a degree in English literature and pursued her dream to become a journalist.
After scrabbling her way up the ranks, she became a journalist for a popular magazine. She met a number of men at the company, and soon singled out a certain one, and after some time she fell in love. After he rejected her, she was severely hurt and became cold to him. This almost angered approach caused him to become attracted to her and fall in love with her eventually. As she came round to his feelings, she soon recognized her own, concealed in the dislike of him.
They soon married Katherine fell pregnant with her daughter. After she was born and named after her mother, Alice, she and her husband moved away from central New York to some suburbs, not far away from her husband’s place of work. Katherine was happy with her new life living where she was with a beautiful daughter. Until her life changed dramatically.
Her daughter was playing in the street, when her ball rolled into the street. She went to pick it up when a car came down the road at a great speed. Kate heard it coming, and ran from the kitchen to the road. She instinctively screamed to repel the car, but because she hadn’t used her powers in a number of years, the car slowed, but still hit Katherine cowering over her daughter.
There were a number of injuries to her back, shoulder and arm. Witnesses claimed she tried to commit suicide with her daughter, and whilst Kate denied this, the tabloids got hold of it, claiming she tried to murder her daughter. In court, the driver told his story, how he saw the girl in the road and her mother run out to her, and after she was found not guilty, she left.
Katherine had told her husband about how she was a mutant, but after the accident, their marriage fell apart. They took equal custody over Alice, and Katherine and her husband parted.
With nowhere to go, Katherine left for the school again, to become a teacher. She took on the name Siren and became a Literacy teacher at the school. After she found out Charles Xavier had engaged in a battle with a number of Brotherhood mutants and was in the process of transferring bodies [[OOC note: I hope this is right, please correct me if not…]], the school didn’t have a leader, and confusion set about. Because Siren had felt the human/mutant injustices, and knew enough about the school and its workings to both take on and teach students, she impulsively stepped forward. After a long while of training and understanding, Siren became a temporary leader until Professor X became back to the school.
Role Playing Sample:
Katherine poked her head round the door of the music room. Her chocolate eyes fell upon the grand piano sat in the corner and her face softened slightly, remembering the days she learnt how to play such a magnificent instrument. She slid in, closing the door behind her with a quiet click and moved across the room.
In a graceful movement, she sat down at the piano, not really knowing why she had impulsively left her office and wanted to play this instrument again. If they knew, they’d go berserk. Still, just a moment.
Siren laid her fingers on the keys, looking through her lashes at the ivory. The most beautiful piano she had ever seen had to belong to this school. Slowly, she ran her fingers up and down the scales, the corners of her mouth lifted slightly as more memories flooded back.
Soon, Katherine found she was absent mindedly playing a song she had beaten into memory and soon sang out the notes to it, then the words. She knew it off by heart. Surprised at herself, she slowly came to a stop and her manicured nails slid of the keys, clicking on the wood as she brought them to her lap. Her eyes moved upwards and she noticed the sun had moved and the sky had darkened slightly. Had she been playing for that long?
Getting up abruptly, she heard a faint snoring. Turning, she noticed a young girl slumped by the door, her mouth slack. Siren’s eyes widened and she brought a hand to her mouth.
”Oh dear…”
Had she been so absent minded that she had forgotten to keep control of the effects of her powers? Looking at the girl, so peacefully in sleep, she smiled slightly. Obviously. Noticing a piece of paper in her hand, she picked it up and inspected it.
Kate,
Could you please return to your office? The music is lovely, but there are things to do.
Jean
xx
Siren smiled briefly, and after deciding to let the girl rest, she slipped from the room and hurried back to her office. Of course it was silly, disregarding all types of responsibility for some play-time in the music room. It was sounding more absurd the more Kate though about it.
Though, she couldn’t help smiling.
