Name: Dr. Jullanna Mayfair
Nicknames: Jules, Julie
Code Name: Bitter Flower
Age: 42
Gender: Female
Powers/Special Abilities: Jules had always had a green thumb. She got it from her mother, who grew prize roses. Jules liked more exotic plants and her mother indulged her. Jules discovered her powers a few weeks after her first menstrual cycle. She noticed that a plant she had just seeded was already sprouting. As she grew older, exploring her powers, she came to see she produced a pollen from her pores. This pollen, when used on flora, acts as an accelerant. As Jules grew older and more familiar with what she could do, she started breeding her own cross breeds of plants to help her fight those that were against mutants and those mutants who harmed humans. Her pollen could be used to cross plants that would never be able to be crossed in natural settings. She also holds a power to control the movement of her floral weapons. This power always makes her immune to natural poisons.
Appearance:
Personality: She’s a happy person most of the time, very sociable and graceful. She grew up in New Orleans, her mother was a socialite, so Jules was taught manners. She is very interchangeable between mucking in a swamp and going to a dinner party. When she’s working, she’s very focused. She doesn’t like people in her green houses unless she is with them, she keeps very dangerous plants. She is stern with students, but otherwise known as a fun teacher. In relationships, she’s a loving friend, a mother figure, and a devoted partner. She loves spring and summer, her personality almost matching those seasons as full of light and sunshine.
Hobbies: Flora collecting, rose breeding, skiing, dancing.
Weapons/Equipment/Skills: Jules is like a chameleon. She can be mucking in a swamp with the best of them or at a party in the thick of it. She was raised in a social community in New Orleans and a debutant. She can set a table, serve a tea, and flirt with several men at once without promising them anything. She can speak several languages: French, Spanish, a little German, and Italian. When out in the field, she carried a bag that includes her microscope, a field kit with tweezers, collection jars, slides, goggles, gloves, and Oreo cookies. She loves Oreos. When out on a mission for the X-Men, she carried several pouches on her uniform filled with special seeds she breed for her purpose alone. The seeds provide her with plants to help use as weapons incase she has none at hand. During her time with the X-Men she has learned to fly helicopters and the X-Jet, though she only does it in cases of emergency.
History: Jules grew up with her mother in New Orleans. Her mother’s family was wealthy, old money, and when she died, Jules was left with almost 5 billion dollars. They lived in a large townhouse in the Garden District. Their house was always neat and trimmed, pictured in several home and garden magazines. Her mother, Lily, raised Jules to be polite and kind. Lily was a prize winning gardener and philanthropist, and Jules loved her mother very much. Jules tried to be like her mother, helping her mother in the gardens. Jules was 13 when she first discovered her mutant ability and her mother was very nurturing. She saw it as a gift from God. Jules offered to use it to help her mother’s prize winning roses. This was one lesson that Jules never forgot.
The day was cool and Lily was working in the rose garden. Jules was with her, as usual. This was several months after Jules realized her mutant ability. Lily was saying she was worried this unusual cold snap would hurt her chances at the next rose competition. Jules offered her help heal the damaged roses and as she reached out to do so, Lily grabbed her hand. ‘No, Jullana.’ Her mother said, pulling her hand back softly, ‘Your gift is a gift from God. We will use it to help those in need, not to cheat.’
Those in need. These words struck Jules as stayed with her all her life. She knew what she would do with her life and she told her mother that day, she would become a botanist. She would use her gift for the good of man. Her mother sent her to the finest schools in the country so Jules could achieve her goal. Jules was already an exceptional student and graduated high school early, at the age of 15. She finished her finishing school at the same time and before leaving for school in New York, made her debutant debut. She went to New York to study in biologist summer programs and then start college at NYU. When Jules was 19, her mother died.
Jules was devastated, but she bounced back, burying herself in school. She knew her mother wouldn’t want her to grieve. Not for long anyway. Jules achieved her doctorate in biology (specifically botany) at the age of 22, with a minor in chemistry. She traveled the world, studying plants in improvised places and breed crops that could be used in drought areas. She won a Nobel Prize in biology at the age of 30. She decided to take a year off of lab work and go into the heart of Africa to do some sample gathering. She did this every five years or so in different parts of the world. Her gathering was fruitful in not only her collection, but she also met Ororo Monroe. They spent 3 days together talking, Ororo was a great fan of flora and was interested in Jules’s work. Jules also learned of Charles Xavier from Ororo.
When she returned to the United States, she met Charles Xavier and was immediately enamored with him.
She saw he was trying to do the same thing she was trying to do. Help people. She saw him as her equal and donated almost a billion dollars to his cause. When she was 37, she went to his school grounds and became a biology teacher. She could do her research from the green houses Xavier had built for her. In kind, she made the school grounds beautiful.
She took special care of those that were akin in her power, providing a college fund for them. She opened the houses she owned around the world to Xavier’s students. She never married, her love being her work and her dream. This was not saying she never had love affairs. She had a run in with Logan several times, a brief afraid with Dr. Hank McCoy, and a string of lovers over the years.
Currently, she works on the Xavier grounds as a teacher, when the X-men don’t need her. She has several published works including books on the Agronomy of Africa and Horticulture of Jullanna Mayfair (A study she worked on for two years at the University of Massachusetts Medical School to study her pollen production and try to reproduce it).
