Name: Rylan Kartheiser
Nicknames: Shady, Noir
Code Name: Targe
Age: 24
Gender: male
Powers/Special Abilities:
Energy Force Contructs
Through concentration, Rylan is able to project a field of psionic force which he can manipulate into a number of relatively simple forms: rectangular planes, cylinders, globes, domes, cones, etc. The complexity of the shape is limited by his ability to imagine a particular form and keep it in sharp mental focus. The size of a given psionic force projection is also limited by his ability to imagine. The smallest force projection he can visualize is the size of a marble. The largest solid force projection he can visualize and maintain is about 100 feet in diameter. He can project larger force-objects if they are hollow. For instance, he could visualize and project a dome of 1 foot thick about a mile in diameter (4,700 feet) and a dome 1 inch in thickness he can project for about 3.2 miles. Small objects at high speeds become missiles; large objects at slow speeds become rams. He can make these objects grow or shrink as desired, up to a size of 100 feet (30 meters).
Rylan is able to use the projection of his psionic force to travel through the air. By projecting a flat surface beneath his feet and simultaneously causing it to rise at the same time, then creating another flat surface a few inches ahead of it, he is able to create a sort of stepping stone pathway to travel through the air. When he leaves the foothold of an energy surface in the air, it will immediately dissipate from the lack of concentration upon it to maintain it. He is able to reach an average speed of about 30 miles per hour, until he becomes fatigued by the concentration, after about 4 hours. He is able to do reach this speed by both running and mentally creating energy surfaces to hold his footing. If he is disrupted somewhat while in the air, he does run the risk of loosing his concentration on these constructs and subsequently running out of a foothold. At the maximum these footholds are able to hold up to one ton at max before breaking from exceeding weight.
The force field constructs Rylan creates can only withstand so much pressure by high velocity impacts before breaking from the excess momentum. Thus if a car traveling at 60 miles per hour hit a wall of his force that was 10 inches thick, unless he generated a bracing shape against a sufficiently sturdy object, he would be in immediate danger of being hit by the car. Rylan is able to control the surface of the fields rigidity to a certain extent. He can cause the surface of the field to be very hard, depending on its thickness (steel-like at about 2.5 feet), or as resilient as foam rubber. By making the field more resilient he is able to absorb more of the inertia of impacts within the field. He is also able to alter the shapes he creates while utilizing those shapes, often to absorb or deflect the force of impacts. When he creates objects of fields that are at the limit of his ability to mentally visualize, they tend to be resilient rather than rigid. He is capable of generating and manipulating multiple psionic force fields simultaneously. Appearance:
Summarized Description Rylan stands at exactly six feet in height and has taken upon himself to build muscle mass in greater proportions to withstand the force of his own powers. His hair is tinted in a birch brown color that is hinted with a bit of blonde within the strands. His eyes are a deep blue in color and he has a bit of facial hair that has developed from traveling around. His choice of clothing is usually a standard issued institute sweatshirt that is gray in color and has a larger hood than the regular hoodie. He also pairs this up with a pair of dirty denim jeans that are also accompanied with a pair of gray sneakers. However, this is all just when he feels tired and lazy, as he also has other clothing that he wears.
Personality: Skeptical, abrasive, and sharp-witted Rylan is somewhat short in the intelligence department, prefering to let his other skills speak for the lack of academic genius. He holds little interest in the uniqueness that surrounds his own powers and prefers to solve problems with his own natural strength and wits, or lack of. He tends to be rash however, and his pride often leads to various levels of embarrassment. As one would expect from someone who is considered silly and stupid, Rylan often comes up with solutions to the problems he comes across, even if they are not very good. The ridiculous plans that he tend to create are somewhat near impossible to carry out, which lead to comedic situations between him and his comrades. His sarcastic and strange behavior can sometimes carry over into important decisions.
A passionate flirt, Rylan is often seen as the one who fails at getting a real girlfriend, as his hedonistic past has somewhat failed to give him a real ethic in the dating life. His peers usually use his past scandal involving himself getting drunk, to which Rylan has not gotten over to this day. Despite his past looming over him, Rylan still manages to get himself into a drunken stupor, which usually happens after a full night of partying. Since he tends to forget what he did the night before, he usually finds himself without the clothing he wore beforehand, leading many to believe he is an exhibitionist. Though one wouldn't see it, Rylan is actually narcoleptic, constantly having urges to fall asleep. He has ways of putting them off for whiles, but he does succumb to some when he feels he needs the extra sleep.
Hobbies: Sleeping, Flirting, Drinking, Sleeping during briefing
Weapons/Equipment/Skills
Taekkyeon Taekkyon contains all kinds of techniques, including hand and leg techniques as well as joint locks, head butts and so on. However, today there are different styles which sometimes do not emphasize all techniques. In all styles, just like in past centuries, kicks are most dominant. Taekkyon teaches a great variety of kicks, especially low kicks (ddanjuk) but also jumps. Taekkyon movements are very fluid and dance-like with the practitioners constantly moving. Thus, it resembles Capoeira and Shaolin Kung Fu. While some people see a certain similarity to the motions of Taekwondo, the techniques and principles differ a lot from those of other Korean martial arts. For example, Taekkyon does not make use of abrupt knee motions. The principles and methods used to extend the kick put more emphasis on fluency and pushing rather than on speed and strength of the kick.
Taekkyon uses many sweeps with straight forward low kicks using the ball of the foot and the heel and flowing crescent-like high kicks. There are many kicks that move the leg outward from the middle and inward from the outside using the side of the heels and the side of the feet. The art also uses tricks like inward trips, wall-jumping, fake-outs, tempo, and slide-stepping. The art is also like a dance in which the fighter constantly changes stance from left to right by stepping forward and backwards with arms up and ready to guard. This art requires traditional Korean white robes. Low kicks, very frequent in Taekkyon, are used to disable an opponent's balance and knock him to the ground. These kicks include leg sweeps as well as direct blows to the knee. There are around 10 different basic techniques of this set of techniques called ddanjuk.
Truncheon History: The small family of the Kartheisers were known for their many different trips around the world. Since the father was a known photographer, and the mother an equally known fashion model, it became a different matter when they decided to adopt a child. As luck would have it, the Kartheisers would traverse into London territory while on a fashion show. The mother would travel out that night and come across an orphanage on her walk, finding a small boy that she would name Rylan. No one knew of the boy's origin prior to the orphanage, other than the fact that he was found out in the ruins of an old war veteran's house in Upper East London. The other known fact of his past before the orphanage was that the original owners were nowhere to be found after the little incident concerning the house, which happened a few months ago.
Rylan lived a very strained and unique childhood, as he was not always in his parents company. His parents would sometimes leave him with a nanny when they would go out and do their fashion shows, which would sometimes take hours to complete. While his parents would go about and do their jobs, Rylan would be up studying with the nanny, learning about the world and things that usually a child wouldn't study at such a young age. It wouldn't help much if his parents would return after every event, but they were always partying and hosting events after the shows that, Rylan would start to see his parents less and less. The only person who would actually take notice to the boy's increasing withdrawal was the parent's nanny, who in time would come across as a long sought after criminal.
On the brink of dawn in the earlier days of early June, the nanny would strike the parent's fortune, swiping about many different heirlooms and trinkets that the two had bought while over the world. Along with the money, the nanny would kidnap Rylan, the boy not knowing what was happening at the time. He just figured they were out doing errands at the time, and didn't suspect the nanny of being a criminal since she was so nice to Rylan. They would journey to the lower portion of London before they would actually get caught by the local police. Now in custody, the nanny would no longer be allowed contact with the Kartheiser family, which saddened Rylan to a point. He was sad since the nanny was actually somebody who would talk to him, and with her gone, there wouldn't be anyone who he could turn to to talk to.
Seeing as how London was getting a little more on the hostile side of things, the Kartheisers thought of moving to a more peaceful, and seeing as how Paris was on the mother's next fashion show, they decided to move to France for a while. France was more or less, a very plain country and the City of Lights was a one of the more enjoyable places in Rylan's eyes. He would spend time walking down the banks of the Seine, as he now had more free time to spend to himself in between doing his school work that his parents gave him while he was now officially home schooled. He didn't mind the work since it was just a bump in him doing other things with his time during the day, such as going to the Tour Total to scare out the businessmen. He didn't have much time to finish his other goals in France as his parent would move again, this time to the cultural city of Tokyo, Japan.
Japan was now the most exciting place that Rylan has gotten to in his childhood since he enjoyed the varied styles of pop culture that Tokyo presented. He enjoyed HachiƓji much since that was where his parents resided in, the fashion show only a few miles away. Tokyo presented many different art schools that a now maturing Rylan found pretty exciting to spend a college year in, or even any sort of school year in. Now entering his early teens, Rylan has started to take up the art of self defense, as well as a few other arts and sports classes so that he could better his time with. However, his parents still had other plans, and with the Tokyo show out of the way, the fashion line was coming to a rest that season. When he heard that his parents were going to leave for the States later that week, Rylan bought out a few manga archives so that he could store it at his next home.
New York City, New York was their new destination, and when Rylan heard about it, he felt a little out of place since he hasn't ever been too a place such as New York before. While he was boarding the plane that was heading back for the States, he felt a little banging in the back of his head, something that he told the help that was not anything serious. A little lounge relaxation and steak dinner was in order, and the journey back on the plane was a bit comfortable, though a bit long. As he lay back on a pillow in the private plane, he began to have more headaches than before he boarded the plane. Popping a few pills, his parents were not as worried as they would be, knowing that the nurses on board knew what they were paid to do. However, they didn't know that the nurses were a pair of Brotherhood members, who were assigned to kidnap Rylan for purposes that were left undiscovered. While they would've succeeded with sneaking out Rylan off of the plane, they were interrupted by the manifestation of Rylan's powers of manipulating force energy. The plane exploded upon the release, with the crew and his parents on board being thrown off the plane from the impact. While they landed safely into the waters below, Rylan was still on board and had suffered a concussion from being knocked out by the impact.
It is assumed that they were rescued a while later, as Rylan awoke from what was told as a very long coma. He was stunned to notice that it was not just a few days that he was out, but few years, as his accident was somehow tampered with beforehand, as was his coma. Now as an older teen, he was not surprised to find his parents no longer around, as they disowned him based on some mutant crisis information they had received while he was in his coma. He left the hospital after they told him that he was healed enough to be active again, finding himself located in the bustling city of New York. At least his former parents were nice enough to leave him with a bit of money, just enough for him to get his new life started in the city. Finding himself a small apartment near the lower portion of New York, he found it quite difficult to live with emerging powers, ones that were hard to control near the beginning.
He would usually destroy a window or even a chair by accidentally activating his powers while not even trying to, which led to very frustrating situations. It was getting to the point where he finally figured that it was time to get some professional help in this area. But by reading the news and the papers, he found that it was taboo and dangerous to be a mutant these days, even if only a small number of people knew. As if by a stroke of luck, he received a letter that invited him to enroll himself into a nearby institute by the name of the Xavier's School. At first, he tossed the letter out and figured it was some mistake as he never really finished up his school work back in the day. However, as he thought about it, there really wasn't anything else for him to do, which led him to pack up and go to enroll himself in the school.
Arriving there a mess and in rags by trying to find ways to get over there, Rylan was astounded by the school that he saw, never really seeing such a school back in London, Paris, or Tokyo. He was surprised to find one out in the city of New York, but he figured that it wasn't something he should really stress his mind on. Inside the school, he found something else that was really surprising; mutants, different ages, ethnicities, and genders. It really was an amazement, to find such as place here while the ongoing mutant crisis went on outside. Taking no time to clean his image up, he finally enrolled himself within the school's roster. before he left the office of the Headmaster, he was offered a unique training session to become what was known as an X-Man, to which he accepted since he wanted to get the hang of his powers.
Years later on, he would finish up his schoolwork, being a little late compared to the others due to his now diagnosed condition of narcolepsy. His training suffered a strain, which was covered to by a few longer portions of sessions. He would finally be accepted into the ranks of the X-men and become a full-fledged graduate of the institute. As of now, he spends his time working as a teacher's assistant in the school and as a field agent in times of X-Men mission acquisition.

Sorry, if I placed it all together, it would be one huge paragraph. It's all basically umbrakinesis, the art of manipulating shadows. Those classified under it are basically sub-categories of the whole power. But if it's a problem, I can always opt a new one no probs. ^^
