Name: Remy LeBeau ('The Beautiful Oarsman', in French.)
Nicknames: 'Cajun', 'Gumbo' and 'Swamp Rat'; all used pejoratively. (As insults.)
Code Name: Gambit
Age: 28
Gender: Female
Powers/Special Abilities: She can change the potential energy inside inanimate objects into kinetic energy, causing said object to explode. (Note that is is apparently only small objects she can do this with--playing cards, bricks, and at one point a length of chain.) Her signature attack is to charge up one of the over-sized playing cards she always carries, and then throw it at an enemy so it explodes in their face. She is also possessed of greater-than-human strength--though nowhere near so great as, say, Wolverine or Rogue--and agility, and is skilled in hand-to-hand combat with her telescopic bo staff.
Appearance:
She stands around 5'10, and her eyes are red with black schlera(the part of one's eye that is usually white.) They glow a fiery red-orange when she is especially angry. Her hair is brown, and in a sort of skater-cut with a short tail at the back.
Personality: While one would hardly call Gambit shy--especially in the presence of a man she finds attractive--she'll hardly be the first to open up to people. She's a thief by trade, she would protest; secrecy comes with the territory. She is not overtly mean-spirited, but she does have a bit of a temper and tends to act without thinking, especially when the issue at stake involves those she cares about. Speaking of caring, in the presence of men she is all charm, becoming very, er, friendly. She can't help that, she would protest; the boys love a girl with an accent.
Hobbies: When she's not kicking ass, you'll generally find her practicing with her bo staff, playing a card game either by herself or against someone else, or driving around somewhere. Or playing pool. She's good at pool.
Weapons/Equipment/Skills: She wields a telescoping bo staff made of metal, or possibly wood with a metallic coating. She also, as mentioned above, throws cards and other small objects that she can cause to explode. Sfe also can exert a mild hypnotic influence on the minds of sentient (self-aware, meaning most humans and mutants) to cause them to believe what she says, and agree with whatever she suggests. Stronger minds seem immune to this.
History:
As near as anyone can tell, Remy was born 28 years ago in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was stolen as an infant from a hospital ward, his parents having quietly abandoned their obviously-mutant daughter upon seeing her horrifying eye-color. The New Orleans Thieves' Guild--a faction of no-accounts living at the edge of the swamp and making their living by stealing--took the baby home with them and she was raised with the LeBeau clan as their own. They referred to him as 'Le demon blanc'--the white she-devil--again for the color of her eyes. They believed she was the one destined to unite the two warring factions, the Thieves' and Assassins' Guilds. At the age of ten they placed her in the care of a gang of street-thieves, who taught her to steal and survive in the streets. Shortly thereafter she attempted to steal from Jean-Luc LeBeau, the patriarch of the Thieves' Guild, who adopted the girl into his family. Gambit's powers manifested in his teens, though she tried to conceal them from her new family. At fifteen, she and her 'cousin' Etienne had their ritual initiation test into the Thieves' Guild. They were assigned to steal from a mutant named Candra--she captured them, and sold them to a child-slave trader called the Pig, who planned to sell them as soldiers. Remy used his powers to escape, but Pig caught them. Remy discovered what would become her signature attack--she picked up and charged a playing card Etienne had dropped, and hucked it at Pig, taking an eye out. She escaped from the headquarters by diving into the sea; she was rescued by the Guild, but her cousin drowned. Later on in an attempt to unify the Guilds, she married Julian Boudreaux, the grandson of the Assassins' Guild's then-patriarch. After the wedding, however, he was challenged by Julian's sister Belladonna to a duel. She killed Belle, and in the interest of preserving the newfound peace Remy was exiled from New Orleans. From there she wandered the world, making her way as a master thief. Eventually she found her power was too great for her to control. She sought out a mutant called Mister Sinister for help. (One might think the name alone would have warned her to be leery, but, hindsight and all that, no?) Sinister modified Gambit's power, decreasing it significantly by bringing it to a manageable(but still considerable) level. In exchange, Gambit was to run various missions for Sinister, one of these being what would come to be known as the Morlock(or Mutant) Massacre. Gambit led a group of mutants into the sewer-tunnels under New York, the goal--apparently unbeknown to her--being to eliminate a group of disfigured mutants called Morlocks. She was unable to stop the slaughter, but did succeed in saving the life of a single small girl, a Morlock called Sarah, who would later become Marrow, the leader of the mutant terrorist group Gene Nation. Not long after, she encountered Storm, age-regressed and essentially helpless, and helped her escape the Shadow King. She then saved her from Nanny and the Orphan-Maker, helping her fend them off. She in turn brought her back to join the X-Men, and she's been one ever since.
Role Playing Sample:
Ah, another mission. There was simply nothing better than the adrenaline rush that came with leaping out of the Blackbird, landing among chaos and screaming, humans crying and running and throwing things in various directions. Danger, mmm, the greatest high in the world.
Almost as good as nicotine.
There, the plane was hovering, the hatch descending, and already cries of terror could be heard. Ugly roars from what must be their enemy filtered through the smoke--fire? No, better--explosions.
Already the other X-Men were galvanized, Cyclops leading the charge into the fray and firing optic-blasts ahead to hopefully clear the way. Storm swept in behind them, clearing the air with gusts of wind. Gambit fished into her pocket for a card. Ha, the King of Diamonds. Lucky. It took only seconds to charge it up, and run to flank the others.
"'Ey! Why'd you start d'party without us, mon ami?," the Cajun called, hurling the paper projectile toward the leader of the two troublemakers--some sort of hideous reptilian beast thing. Oddly enough it was somehow bipedal, and had ordinary humanoid hands terminating in inward-twisted claws. It turned its misshapen head toward her in response, crocodilian jaws opening to hiss in anger. It wasn't quick enough to dodge her calling-card, though--the card struck it in the jaw, tearing bloody gouges across its face. Panicked and now half-blind, the thing soon fell victim to Wolverine's claws and Storm's lightning strikes. Gambit, Rogue and Cyclops set off after the other, who had made a beeline for a nearby fence. Just a tap of Cyclops' visor had the poor mutie howling in pain as the laser burned his hands, making him drop the fence and tumble to the ground. The other three were on him quickly. Gambit was about to haul him upright, when the boy whipped around and slashed at her with a concealed blade-thing. A stinger? Yes; it came from under the boy's shorts; it was the tail of a scorpion! He whipped out at them with it again, but this time Gambit was ready. Bo-staff in hand and extended, she pinned the tail harmlessly aside as Rogue drained away the boy's energy, rendering him docile and harmless. Whew--now just to get the kid loaded back into the Blackbird and home to the school for examination and questioning. All in a day's work for the X-Men.
X-Men; Brotherhood; Neutral: X-Men
Other: She speaks Cajun French and English--albeit heavily-accented--and was formerly a smoker. The Professor convinced her to quit. Do forgive the suckiness; I'm struggling against the onset of the flu at the moment. Hurray for febrile typing!
